Drift
The most prominent feature of this quartet is an impression of “free” meter, or perhaps no meter at all. Many of my earlier pieces, particularly my percussion quartet, rely on regular rhythmic patterns for musical development. As a result, the players are almost always “locked in” to the music. Drift, on the other hand, is metrically constructed from an opposite approach, thereby giving the four musicians more independent roles.
Drift, composed in Spring of 2009, is scored for Piano, Cello, Viola, and Flute, doubling Alto Flute.
