Music for Wind Symphony and Three Soloists

Music for Wind Symphony and Three Soloists, is a four-movement, twenty-five minute work for wind symphony, featuring solo marimba, flute, and euphonium.

The work is an attempt to synthesize the various colors of the wind symphony by extracting and blending three of its most dissimilar components.  A movement is devoted to each soloist, each intended to exhibit the particular nuances of the instrument through melodic solo passages and various polyphonic textures.  The work is held together by recurring melodic themes, occasionally passed between the soloists.  A Prelude precedes the three movements, which introduces the three players in the context of the ensemble, then pulls them from the group via a brief trio, which then leads into the first solo movement.

The piece was premiered by the Brown Wind Symphony on March 8, 2008, featuring Aaron D. Jones on marimba, Piet Walvoord on flute, and Stephen Babish on euphonium.
