Fractus I for Trumpet in C and Electronic Sound

Fractus I. is a composition for live trumpet and electronic sound. The electronic score was primarily composed using SuperCollider. The piece relies on a number of granular-synthesis techniques, which allowed for open-ended manipulation of tonal and rhythmic ideas. The piece focuses extensively on pitch activity and pulse regularity. The trumpet and computer attempt to play mutually supportive roles.

Alan Lara and Grant Harbison, two North Texas graduate students in trumpet performance, were tremendously helpful in providing trumpet samples and indispensable feedback.
