Fractus II for Viola and SuperCollider
Fractus II, written for viola and electronic sound, is the second in a series of compositions for instrument and SuperCollider. Unlike Fractus I, which relies primarily on file playback for electronic sound generation, Fractus II focuses on live signal processing. Furthermore, with the use of an onstage MIDI footswitch controller, the performer can record short segments of sound, which are played back and manipulated at various points throughout the piece.
Angela Grasso (MM viola performance) and Russell Podgorsek (DMA composition), two graduate students at the University of Texas, were tremendously helpful in recording the viola part and providing feedback.
