In early 2011, between electroacoustic projects, I spent a semester focusing exclusively on acoustic music. This was a fairly productive time for me; in addition a duet for soprano and piano, as well as a quartet for trumpet and various percussion, I wrote Romanza, which served as a means to revisit my love of the wind ensemble, a passion which strongly guided my work and influences between 2002 and 2008. The piece could be described as unassuming, drawing on simple harmonies, and building toward a gradual emotional surge and release.
